What if we told you there is a beach in the Tar Heel State that is always magically filled with sand dollars? Hundreds, maybe even thousands of sand dollars! No one knows for sure WHY this island has so many of the sea cookies, but it does. Take a look, and then start making plans to visit!

Appropriately named, SAND DOLLAR ISLAND is located between Carrot Island and Shackleford Island.

What’s more: you can only get there by boat! For a nominal fee, you can take a short ferry ride to get there. Or, for free, you can paddle over on a kayak (experienced yakers only, please).

And then once you get there, the magic begins: sand dollars are everywhere! They’re even laying on the sand just under the surface of the shallow waters.

And you’ll find them laying on top of and lodged in the sand up on the beach!

It’s impossible to make a trip to Sand Dollar Island and NOT find sand dollars!

You may even find a bevy of conch shells too.

If there aren’t any living creatures inside, then you can collect them and take them home.

The same goes for the sand dollars. Enjoy the ones that are still living, but leave them on the island.

Take home all the dead ones you want! (And there are a LOT of dead ones you can take home.)

Sand Dollar Island is mainly accessible during low tide. For that reason, the ferry service schedule changes each day, depending on the tide schedule. Also, there are no facilities - and there is NO SHADE - on the island. Prepare accordingly, and bring plenty of water.
