The beaches of Maine are a bit different than they are anywhere else, and that’s exactly how we like them. But as comforting and pleasant as our rocky shorelines can be, sometimes nothing but a good old-fashioned sandy beach day will do, even if that means it’s a bit crowded. If you don’t mind sharing your space with others, check out Old Orchard Beach this summer.

Old Orchard Beach is a 170-year-old community, although the area has appeared in historical records as early as 1653. It was named after an apple orchard planted by its first settler, Thomas Rogers from Salem, Massachusetts.

But even though it stays perpetually packed, you won’t find a better place to spend a hot summer day.

Old Orchard Beach is best known for its iconic pier.

sarowen / Flickr There has been a pier here for well over a century, although this is not the original structure. A series of storms ate away at the old pier for years, and it was finally completely rebuilt in 1980 with wood after a 1978 blizzard destroyed it.

The pier, which extends 500 feet over the ocean, is full of carnival food, souvenir shops, and even a nightclub.

Maine’s top beachfront amusement park, Palace Playland, will delight little ones and grown ups alike.
