2019 is barely underway and we’ve already got something exciting on the calendar for this month. Surely you remember the solar eclipse of 2017, but did you know that lunar eclipses could be equally breathtaking? If you’ve never experienced one, you’re in luck. The upcoming total lunar eclipse will feature a blood moon, meaning the moon will turn an otherworldly red color for about an hour. Here’s more on this breathtaking phenomenon that will soon be visible from Virginia:
On January 20th, 2019, the US will have a front row seat to the first total lunar eclipse in three years. Yet there’s something extra special about this month’s phenomenon.

Categorized as a “super blood wolf moon eclipse,” this celestial event is bound to be one for the books. To start with, the moon will be at its closest point to earth, which will make it appear brighter and bigger than normal, aka “super.”

Secondly, when the Earth, moon, and sun align, the light from the sun passing through the Earth’s atmosphere will cause the moon to have a temporary red glow. This is why it’s referred to as a blood moon.

Lastly, the first moon in January is always referred to as a “wolf” moon, which explains the meaning behind this unusual naming.

Around 12:12 a.m. EST, North and South America as well as Africa will have a front row seat to this spectacular event. The eclipse will begin as early as 10:35 p.m., so prepare to spend plenty of time outdoors.
