If you’re like us, then sunflowers just naturally make you smile. So imagine the size of your grin when you visit this huge u-pick sunflower field in North Carolina. For at least the last three years, the Raised In A Barn Farm in Chocowinity has opened their fields for a couple of weekends each summer for sunflower picking – and you won’t want to miss it.

Acres of the bright and cheery flowers magically (with a little help) sprout from the ground and are so plentiful, you’ll feel like the field goes on forever.

Seen here before reaching their prime, the rows and rows of blooms are facing the sun, one theory on how the plant came upon its name.

If that theory doesn’t sound plausible enough, maybe you’ll buy into the theory that this bright flower gets its name from the shape of the bright yellow blooms.

Raised In A Barn Farm is the home of the North Carolina Sunflower Festival. In this photo taken in 2017, a couple of trails were created to guide farm visitors through the gigantic field.

So when does the sunflower magic begin? It’s all according to how Mother Nature behaves. In the past, the prime u-pick weekends were at the beginning of July.

You may not be able to mark your calendar yet for this year’s crop, but you CAN follow the farm’s Facebook page here to get notified when the u-pick days are announced.

Last year, the u-pick sunflowers were $1 each, or 12 blooms for $10. Prices may vary this season. Raised In A Barn Farm is located a mere 20 miles southeast of Greenville and only five miles south of Washington, North Carolina.
