However, the overlook is much more than a photogenic spot to take in the view. It’s also a stellar place to view the region’s world-famous birds of prey. The overlook is a part of Morley Nelson Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area—an area that boasts the greatest concentration of birds of prey in North America.

It’s estimated that around 800 pairs of hawks, owls, eagles, and falcons nest here each spring, so you’re bound to see quite a few of them while you’re here. The best time to visit is considered mid-May, since that’s when most young birds have hatched.

Keep your eyes peeled and you might spot a falcon diving towards the canyon floor or an eagle snatching up some food. The birds are known to get pretty rowdy, so be sure to listen for their cries!
