Hiding in Tuolumne is a seriously awesome trail that should definitely be on your radar this spring. Boasting both stunning views and a rich history, te West Side Trail has everything you could ask for in an outdoor adventure and you’ll want to experience it for yourself.

The West Side Trail is one of Tuolumne’s best-kept secrets. The trail follows a former railroad that used to belong to the West Side Lumber Company. The deterioriating railroad tracks haven’t carried a train in some time, but it certainly makes for a picturesque hiking destination.

The trail couldn’t be any more scenic. It winds its way along the ridge that hovers above the North Fork of the Tuolumne River. Along the way, you’ll encounter a myriad of signs explaining the rich history behind the railroad tracks.

It turns out this narrow-gauge railroad was built well over a century ago, back in 1898. Its job was to bring lumber from the mountains into downtown Tuolumne City where the West Side Lumber Co. was located.

The trail meanders around the ridge for approximately five miles. Its flat surface and picturesque setting makes it ideal for hikers of all skill levels. Additionally, picnic tables and benches are placed along the trail which is perfect for taking a break and soaking it all in.
