There’s something fun about stumbling upon something that feels like a secret. Whether it’s a hidden trail deep within the woods or a new restaurant that you’re the first to try, the act of discovering can be deeply satisfying. That’s why we love this spot in Nashua. It hearkens back to a different era and if you’re not looking closely you might not realize it’s a bar at all!

If you were walking down the street, you might think that Codex is simply a used bookstore. There are dusty-looking books lining the windows and it has a distinctly old-timey feel even from the outside.

But take a peek inside (via the secret side door on Elm Street!) and you’ll find a bar that hearkens back to a time when booze was illegal - but that didn’t mean it wasn’t served.

Just like it might have been during Prohibition in the 1920s, you’ll first see a giant bookcase. But just beyond that there’s an entrance revealing the bar area.

While there are surely bars in America that have a 1920s theme, few of them dedicate themselves so fully to recreating a true 1920s experience.

They carry a wide variety of old-fashioned drinks all served in glassware reminiscent of the time. Think Old-Fashioneds and Manhattans.
