There’s no better feeling than being rewarded with the sight of a glorious waterfall at the end of a hiking trail. Something about ending a hike with a picture-perfect scene just makes the experience all the more memorable. There’s one hike in Northern California that’s become iconic for its stunning vantage point of one of our state’s most mesmerizing waterfalls. It may be a man-made waterfall, but that doesn’t make it any less beautiful! If you’re looking for an outdoor excursion with plenty of beauty, both natural and man-made, then this trail is definitely for you.
Some of Northern California’s most incredible natural wonders aren’t natural at all. The man-made waterfall created by Lake Clementine Dam is the perfect example and it’s a stunning sight that every nature lover will want to see for themselves.

Located near Auburn, you can actually get a great view of the dam by driving near it. However, it’s much more rewarding to make the moderate 4.5-mile to see it instead. After all, this hike has a little bit of everything—gorgeous scenery, a lake, a historic bridge, and of course, a man-made waterfall.

You’ll find the trailhead at Auburn State Recreation Area, located right next to the North Fork of the American River. A small fee of $10 is required to park here since it is a state park.

From here, you’ll hop onto a dirt road which you will follow for a few miles. The trail is well-maintained and boasts absolutely splendid views of the surrounding area.

At one point, you’ll pass directly underneath the historic Foresthill Bridge. Towering 700-feet above you, it’s considered the fourth highest bridge in the United State and highest in all of California.

The trail closely follows the American River and you’ll come across numerous spots that are great for dipping your toes in. There are plenty of little beaches that are perfect for hanging out, but there’s a lot more to the trail to see!
