There are quite a few museums in Maine. From the wacky (ever been to a museum totally dedicated to umbrella covers?) to the educational, those seeking to understand more about the world around them will find plenty of ways to do it here in Vacationland. But, one of our favorite ways to enrich ourselves is through the consumption of the best sweet treat: chocolate! This factory tour is a veritable museum of all things chocolate and we’ve planned visits for all of our summer guests this year!

Since 1983, Wilbur’s of Maine Chocolate Confections has been bringing a bit of the sweet life to tourists and locals alike in Freeport.

Absolutely jam-packed with sweets, there’s nothing this sweet candy shop doesn’t have.

And even if you’re just here for the tour, you’ll definitely walk out with something for later.

We love all the ready-made candy all homemade and ready for taking home, but the chocolate museum and factory tour is the best part of a visit. Especially watching these Scotch kisses being made with the freshest caramel!

The tours here take you through their own version of a chocolate museum, allowing visitors to learn the history of the store, watch chocolate being made, and eat tons of delicious samples!

This is what you’ll get on the “Guided Factory Tour.”

wilburs.com These tours are about half an hour and tickets are $3.50.

You can also take the “Hands-On Factory Tour” offering the same educational opportunities and chocolate creation, but with the addition of making your own treats to take home!

wilburs.com These tours are nearly an hour and tickets are $4.50.

Because this museum is a working chocolate factory, there are always new things being made. That means you’ll want to visit over and over again to see new creations.

Visit in the fall for a chance to get these Maine grown apples dipped in homemade caramel and milk chocolate.

And, like any good museum, you’ll want to leave with a non-edible souvenir as well. Be sure to stop in the gift shop for a shirt or postcard.
