Just when you thought you have seen and done it all in West Virginia there comes yet another extraordinary reason to get out and explore – especially this underrated museum in Point Pleasant – the home of the Mothman and the site were an abandoned TNT factory sits wide open for exploration. This unique museum is located out on Fairground Road, north of town and adjacent to the notorious site where the Mothman is thought to have squired away in the years before (and possibly since) his last sighting.
But don’t let the name of this attraction, the West Virginia State Farm Museum, deter a visit to this out of the ordinary museum. While it does chronicale the farm way of living in the Mountain State in days gone by, it also tells another story of life in the Mountain State and spans several generations.

In additional to old farm tools and equipment, it has so much more! Even an old funeral carriage, complete with viewing windows on the side.

It’s safe to say most of the more than 35 buildings belonging to this vast museum depict a way a life during the old days, when farming wasn’t quite as comfortable (with machines, cell phones, and electricity) as it is today.

Most, if not all, of the buildings on the property reflect something of the past and each has a unique exhibit worth exploring.

One of the prized displays is noted as the World’s Third Largest Horse ‐ a Belgian that stood more than 19 hands high and weighed nearly 2,000 pounds. Yes… it was stuffed for posterity and eventually landed in this amazing museum that few people know about.

The many exhibits include an old train that once ran through the area, a schoohouse built in the 1800s only two miles from where it sits now, a rural doctor’s office (the entire building and its contents donated by a West Virginia family) and more than a few eye-raising surprises.

Over in the barber and beauty shop collection, you’ll see chairs and equipment spanning a number of decades.

Among the newest exhibits is a collection of bears, all perfectly preserved. Not all of the bears are indigenous to the Mountain State, but you can bet the hunter who donated this massive collection lived here!

With more than 35 buildings and so much ground to cover, you can expect to spend at least half a day touring all of the exhibits that are in some way or another related to West Virginia and/or life on the farm in a bygone era.

The West Virginia State Farm Museum is located at 1458 Fairground Rd., Point Pleasant, WV 25550. It’s open Tuesday through Sunday from April 1 through November 15 each year. The hours are: Tuesday through Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sunday 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Learn more on the official website!
