Do you like ghost stories? If so, this one will give you a delicious dose of the goosebumps. Massachusetts is no stranger to things that go bump in the night, but this spooky tale out of Hull is definitely one of the most spine-tingling in the state. Grab a flashlight and settle in for a ghostly read.
Hull is a sleepy little coastal town on the South Shore. It’s best known for its tiny size (it’s the fourth-smallest in the state), gorgeous sea views, and proximity to Spinnaker Island.

However, this seaside community may also home to one of the most puzzling and eerie supernatural occurrences in the state: the curious legend of the Hull mystery buggy. The first recorded sighting of the Hull mystery buggy was taken down March 4, 1902, though the phenomenon was well-known by that point.

Capt. Joshua James of Hull, an extremely practical and skeptical man, was out walking in Hull one evening around midnight when he encountered something chilling and more than a little confusing,

As he walked on the road to Stony Beach, the sea captain reported seeing a buggy, or horse-drawn carriage, roll past him. This buggy made no sound whatsoever as it traveled along the rough road and seemed to have no one inside or in the drivers seat.

As if this wasn’t enough to terrify the captain, the buggy seemed to continue down the road until it simply vanished into the sea mists, apparently gliding right off dry land and out into the ocean.

The so-called mystery buggy has been spotted repeatedly over the years. It is said to silently roll through the streets of Hull at midnight, sometimes causing drivers to swerve off the road or even feel they are being pursued by the carriage.

Though there have never been any deaths or injuries reported in connection with the buggy, an older legend holds that spotting the buggy is a terrible omen. Are you brave enough to wander Hull after dark to catch sight of this creepy apparition?
