Already making plans for the unofficial start of summer? Memorial Day weekend generally promises plenty to do – from taking a dip in one of the newly-opened swimming pools to soaring down hills on the coasters at Kennywood. Now, you have another memorable, family-friendly activity to add to that long last weekend of May. Visit this sky lantern festival near Pittsburgh for an evening to remember.

Clear your calendar for the evening of May 25, 2019 when the epic Night Lights Sky Lantern Festival, modeled after traditional Thai lantern festivals, will take over the Westmoreland County Fairgrounds in Greensburg.

Doors to Night Lights open at 4:30 p.m., while guests will launch the balloons at 9:30 p.m.

But, before the sun goes down and the lanterns are released into the sky, you’ll have time to decorate your lantern.

Add your wishes, hopes, or dreams for the future. Or, simply send your lantern soaring to the sky without any writing or drawings.

In the hours leading up to the lantern launch, chat with other guests or relax with a snack and a drink. (You can bring snacks and drinks. However, alcohol and coolers are prohibited.)

Tickets for Night Lights are currently on sale. Adult tickets (12 and older) cost $65. And, each adult ticket includes admission, an entry wristband, and a sky lantern.

Children, 11 and younger, pay $15. Kids tickets also allow entry to a fun kids area. But, a lantern is not included in the ticket price.

Wondering what will happen to all those lanterns after the festival? Night Lights has a clean-up crew that spends 48 hours after the event cleaning up the area. What’s more, the lanterns are made from biodegradable materials.
