Sometimes we all need a little bit of the tropics – whether we’re trudging through winter or we’re fighting the sweltering temperatures in summer. And, what could be better than strolling through a tropical forest in Pittsburgh (yes, Pittsburgh!), where we can meet a slew of feathered friends and even a furry one – from majestic macaws to an adorable sloth? Next time you’re in the mood for a walk on the wild side, you know where to go…

Exploring the National Aviary is pretty much a tradition for Pittsburghers. In fact, many with annual passes make the trek to the avian paradise multiple times each year.

And, now, when we need an infusion of summer, we can visit the new Tropical Rainforest, a spectacular room that features…

Plenty of sunlight (on those lovely golden days in the Burgh) and natural light filtering in from the all-glass ceiling and over 400 lush tropical plants.

And, as you enter the Tropical Rainforest, listen for the tumbling of water in the 15-foot waterfall. You might even catch some of the birds playing or bathing in the water or flying right above you.

Of course, you’ll meet plenty of beautiful birds, all in their home that was designed to “mimic a natural rainforest habitat.”

Get a close-up view of some of the rainforest’s residents, including the Great Argus Pheasants Mrs. Gus and Gus, Benito the Hyacinth Macaw, and the Palm Cockatoo known as Bubba.

And, while you’re exploring the rainforest, keep an eye out for Wookiee, the adorable two-toed sloth, as he just hangs around.

Then, once you’ve relished your rainforest experience, head out to explore the rest of the aviary. Meet the penguins, bald eagles, and flamingos. (And, don’t forget to check out the shows and feedings. Additional fees may apply.)
