Who doesn’t love a good ghost story? The legend of Vermont’s screaming bridge is one that will make your spine tingle like crazy. Though it’s one of this state’s most infamous spooky stories, it’s definitely worth a retelling. Dim the lights and grab a flashlight – here’s the legend of Emily’s Bridge.

Located in Stowe, Gold Brook Bridge looks inconspicuous enough at first place. However, it’s actually the focus of one of Vermont’s most ghastly ghost stories.

There are almost as many versions of this tale as there are Vermonters, but they all center on a woman named Emily. Her tragic fate has given the spot its grisly reputation and the nickname “Emily’s Bridge.”

One tale casts Emily as a young woman jilted at the altar. In a frenzy, she stole her family’s wagon and drove off to look for her groom only to plummet from the bridge into the rocky stream below.
