With approximately 20 volcanoes ranging in age from 400,000 years to 5.1 million years, the Hawaiian Islands are full of fascinating history of volcanoes, and incredible landscapes formed from flowing lava. From underground lava tubes in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to stunning landscapes carved into the coastline, nowhere will you find cooler lava formations than Hawaii. While everyone travels to the Big Island to get up close and personal with lava flows — especially the currently erupting Kilauea — this Maui trail leads hikers on a journey across the island’s youngest lava flow and is quite the adventure.

Nestled on Maui’s remote southern shore, the Hoapili Trail begins at La Perouse Bay and introduces adventure seekers and outdoor lovers to a side of the island rarely seen by tourists.

This hot, barren 5.5-mile round trip trek follows a section of coastal walking path known as the King’s Highway that was built in the early 1800s and once only open to royalty.

It is also the site of the last recorded lava flow on Maui. Until recently, Haleakala was thought to have erupted last around 1790 based on comparisons of maps made during the voyages of George Vancouver and La Perouse.

However, recent advanced dating tests have determined that the last eruption was more likely to have occurred in the 17th century. Either way, this volcanic hike is truly unlike any other you’ll find in the Aloha State — and the world.

Because you won’t find any shade along this trail, we suggest wearing a hat, reapplying reef-safe sunscreen often, and bringing plenty of water. The lava rock found along the trail can be sharp, so you’ll want to ditch the slippers and lace up your hiking boots.
