In 1889, the building served as a prestigious schoolhouse known as the Chesapeake Male and Female Academy. 450 students attended rigorous classes here and some were boarders who lived on property during the school year.

The school closed in 1908 and little is known about the building until it reopened as the King Carter Inn and eventually, the Hope & Glory Inn in 1996.
