The hiking trails along Oregon’s 363 miles of coastline offer lush forests, incredible overlooks, and gorgeous beaches, and you could spend years exploring them all. The shady little Hobbit Trail near Florence takes you to a beautiful, secluded beach, and the short journey will make you feel as though you’re in a J.R.R. Tolkien novel.
For a magical adventure down a shady coastal trail, take the Hobbit Trail to Hobbit Beach. You’ll find the trailhead just north of Heceta Head, along Highway 101.

This short, sweet trail is just a half mile long, and it’s easy enough for just about everyone. Kids will especially get a kick out of the tree tunnels along the way.

The moss-covered trees add to the enchanting atmosphere, and some of them almost look like hairy creatures emerging from the woods.

On a misty morning, the beach looks just like a scene you’d expect in a Lord of the Rings movie. You might see Gandalf himself emerging from the fog…or perhaps just some fellow Oregonians enjoying a stroll.

Though the hike is short, make sure to set aside plenty of time for this adventure, especially if you have kids along. The trail is full of wonders to see and explore, and the beach has interesting tide pools and plenty of room to run and play.
