At first glance, Portland, Maine might not seem like the place to go for outdoor adventures. Unless you want to spend some time on Casco Bay, most of the town feels like shops, restaurants, and bars. But after a closer look, you’ll find that opportunities to get outside abound! In fact, one of the most lovely is hidden just outside the hustling, bustling downtown area. This short hike leads to a beautiful waterfall and its proximity to town means you’ll still have time to get back, shower and be sitting down to dinner before sundown.

The Fore River Sanctuary includes 85 acres of Maine ecology and it’s located just off of Congress Street! Inside the sanctuary, the Fore River meets the ocean resulting in a marshy landscape with lots of wildlife.
