Across America, and in particular, Indiana, you will find countless incredible festivals in the spring and summer months celebrating everything from a city’s favorite food to cultural heritage. Indiana’s festivals are obviously our favorite, and while we love all of these incredible celebrations, today, we’re sharing with you a one-of-a-kind festival that celebrates all things German. Mark your calendar, because this heritage festival features authentic delights you won’t want to miss.
Built in 1794 by the United States Army under the direction of Anthony Wayne, a general in the Revolutionary War, Fort Wayne, Indiana was the last in a series of forts built near the Miama village of Kekionga. Today, the population sits at approximately 253,000, but it wasn’t until the turn of the 19th century that the town’s population reached 50,000, largely due to an influx of Irish and German immigrants.

That heritage is celebrated today with one of the cities most popular festivals: GermanFest. Now in its 38th year, the festival will be held June 2-9, 2019 at Headwaters Park in downtown Fort Wayne.

The annual, week-long festival celebrates German heritage and Essen, Trinken, and Gemütlichkeit — or in English: eating, drinking, and having a really good time. Now that’s something we can get on board with.

Don’t fret, though: this is indeed a family-friendly event. Kids will love having their face painted or having a balloon animal made for them. Oh, and who wouldn’t want to watch the National Weiner Dog Finals?
