Since South Dakota’s state motto is “Under God the people rule,” it’s no surprise that you can find some absolutely lovely churches in the state. One of the loveliest among those churches is the Cathedral of St. Joseph. Once you enter the church, you’ll find the massive building is a true work of art.
St. Joseph Cathedral is located in an area of Sioux Falls called the Cathedral Historic District. Even from a distance, the cathedral is impressive.

Once you approach the cathedral, you can see it is absolutely massive. It was originally called St. Michael’s, and it dates back to 1881. St. Michael’s was built out of wood, however.

The current building was completed in 1919, and though some changes and additions have occurred in the last hundred years, the Cathedral of St. Joseph remains on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Cathedral of St. Joseph in Sioux Falls, South Dakota is an incredible work of art that you can walk around inside. It is a vital piece of South Dakota history, in a historic district, and on the National Register of Historic Places.
