Pickles are a big deal in Atkins, the sweetly sour vegetable has sustained their local economy since 1945. The festival paying homage to the pickle began in 1922 and has become a favorite fest for Arkansans.
The pickle legacy of the town also comes from their fried pickles.
People for a Better Atkins, Picklefest Many vital food traditions began in Arkansas (cheese dip anyone?) and the fried pickle is one of the tastiest. Fatman’s Original Fried Dill Pickle developed from the first fried pickle in 1963 by Bernell “Fatman” Austin. The festival is one of the only places to enjoy the legendary originals.
In addition to the normal (albeit pickle-themed) vendors, beauty pageant, and fair foods, the festival also hosts some interesting contest.
