This scenic drive in Kansas is full of some of our best scenery, and everyone should take it at least once. Have you been around these parts before?

Have you ever seen a wide expanse of red hills in Kansas before? If you have, they were probably the Gypsum Hills hiding out in south Kansas, between Coldwater and Medicine Lodge.

Almost every one of these 42 miles is filled with scenery like this, with flat-topped hills and red, red rock, and patches of wildflowers when they’re in season. You might think a 45 minute drive is boring, but this is nothing like a drive along I-70 where all you see is dirt and farmland.

Not only is this area beautiful, but it’s also full of history. Native Chiefs Black Kettle and White Bear, the infamous Carrie Nation, and pioneer travels have all turned this land into a historically significant area. Medicine Lodge itself is the location of the Indian Peace Treaty.

If you have already driven through here before on a few occasions, then consider exploring more of the area via horseback. There’s something special about traveling through this area like our predecessors did long before any motor vehicles were even thought of.
