Maine is the best. We know that and if the constant stream of visitors throughout the winter, spring, summer and fall is any indication most of America knows it too. But while we get tons of national coverage in the media, not everyone has us figured out. In fact, there are some widely held misconceptions about Maine that we think need correction. Starting with these!

1.There are moose everywhere and they’re adorable!

sensual_shadows_photography / Flickr There’s a specific season when you might come across a moose if you’re in the right part of the state, but for the most part they’ll stay out of your way. However! Moose are not always adorable. In fact, they’re downright dangerous if you’re driving a car. Always be careful.

  1. Growing up here is boring.

juhansonin / Flickr If the larger towns and cities offer everything you need in terms of culture, the outdoors offers everything else. Kids growing up in Maine have everything they need to keep them busy. All they need to do is go outside.

  1. Maine has just two seasons.

coreytempleton / Flickr Our winters and summers might be the most notable, but…

  1. It’s always cold.

oliverjd / Flickr Sure, winters come with an average temperature in the 20s. But summers are glorious! With average temps that rarely get above 80, things here are calm, cool and collected all summer long.

  1. The only real beauty exists on the coast.

topazz1963 / Flickr Nope! Our inland areas are gorgeous too. There are forests, mountains and marshes galore, which is why we love weekends at camp.

  1. Autumn here is one in a million!

Susan Bell / Flickr This one’s actually pretty true.

  1. It’s cold and snowy all the time.

romanboed / Flickr Our winters are certainly long. And it often FEELS like it’s cold and snowy all the time. But the reality is that our summers are worth the (very) long wait. 80s and sunny is the summer norm and we love it that way.

  1. When it IS cold and snowy, it’s not worth going outside.

almostsummersky / Flickr Actually, Maine in the winter is perfect. Snow looks great on Vacationland, which is why our long winters aren’t exactly the worst things in the world.

  1. When you DO go to the coast, it has to be in the summer.

pavdw / Flickr Nope. Mainers love visiting the beach in the winter. It’s often when the place is deserted because visitors from away have gone home. The views are beautiful!

It’s not hard to see how much we love Maine. And, we know you do too. Next step is to make sure you spend your life with one! Here are 13 reasons why we think everyone should marry a Mainer.
