When you think of America’s greatest waterfalls, you probably don’t think of Nebraska, you know, with it being such a flat, landlocked state and all. But if you head to the western part of the state near the Niobrara River, you’ll find a few unexpectedly gorgeous cascades, including the one we’re sharing with you today. Nestled within the breathtaking Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge in Valentine, Nebraska, Fort Falls is an absolute stunner.

Encompassing more than 19,000 acres, the Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge is home to stunning vistas that stretch as far as the eye can see, roaming buffalo and elk, prairie dogs, and the fabulous Fort Falls.

This stunning slice of paradise is gorgeous year-round, though we’re particularly drawn to the area in the Springtime. This refuge is both remote and wild, and it’s unlikely that you’ll encounter many other visitors.

…and to the stunning Fort Falls. Cascading a modest 45 feet down a stark cliff face, Fort Falls might not be the tallest waterfall in Nebraska, but when measured by volume, it is the state’s largest.
