About an hour south of Indianapolis and an hour east of Bloomington, the unincorporated community of Story, Indiana is a historic vacation spot that is looking for a new owner. The National Register of Historic Places recently listed it after almost 170 years of operation.

Indiana’s smallest old town began in 1851 when it was founded by a guy named Dr. George P. Story. He was granted land by little-known 13th president of the United States Millard Fillmore. The town was originally called Storyville and was established as a lumber town that housed several general stores, a church, a schoolhouse, a blacksmith shop, a butcher, and even a post office.

When the Great Depression hit, Story became a ghost town and stayed as such until the 1980s. In 1978, a motivated couple saw potential and an opportunity in Indiana’s smallest old town and decided to start the Story Inn, which brought a small resurgence to this tiny haven.

The last time the town was for sale was in 1999. The current owner, along with the innkeepers, have worked hard to preserve the 19th century charm of this nearly abandoned village.
