Though the beauty of nature is definitely it’s own reward, sometimes it’s nice to embark on a hike that will take you somewhere really cool. This trail in Vermont will actually let you explore the wreckage of a real WWII plane crash. Here’s what you need to know to set off on your adventure.

This hike on Camel’s Hump in Vermont is a unique adventure that combines the majesty of nature with a really fascinating destination.

In October of 1944, a WWII training mission in Vermont resulted in the tragic crash of a B-27J Bomber plane on Camel’s Hump mountain. The pilot’s fate is unknown, but the wreckage has remained on the peak ever since.

Reaching this spot takes a bit of patience and a sturdy pair of legs, but the payoff is well worth it. You’ll need to hop on the Alpine Trail and continue until you’re about 0.4 miles from the summit.

As you near the top of the peak, look for a small herd path on your left. Following the path will quickly take you to the crash site.

Though much of the main body of the plane has either rusted away or has been removed by officials, sections of a wing remain. This is a great opportunity to peek into history and take some eye-catching photographs.

If you do visit the plane site, please be respectful of the wreckage and do not climb, sit, or otherwise damage the wing. Think of it as a free museum exhibit.

Hiking from the trailhead to the summit will take you over 1.6 miles of terrain. Wear sturdy shoes, pack snacks and water, and expect a challenging but rewarding trek. This hike is not to be missed!
