Not many restaurants in South Carolina (only one, in fact) can boast of having a front door sheathed entirely in alligator skin. Or of being given a nostalgic name eerily familiar to those baby boomers who came up through the ranks into adulthood in an era when a not-so-small cab company saw to their safe, albeit drunken, return home after a raucous night on the town.

But you don’t need to know the history of the name of the Rutledge Cab Company to enjoy this eclectic restaurant in Charleston’s trendy Wagener Terrace neighborhood on the upper peninsula.

The eatery is located in an old convenience store and gas station that’s transformed into an artfully crafted space mingled with signs of the past.
