New Orleans is no stranger to up-cycling buildings. When buildings no longer serve their current purpose, you can bet that someone is waiting to turn one man’s trash into another man’s treasure. Just look at how Cowbell on Oak Street turned a former gas station into a quirky eatery. Rosedale Restaurant is one of those places, and it’s worth your while to pay them a visit.

You’ll find Rosedale over in the Navarre neighborhood of New Orleans. This unassuming building may look more like a home than a restaurant, but that’s just one of the unique quirks about this hidden gem that makes it so special.

The building was built in 1936 and originally located near the New Basin Canal. It was moved to its present location in 1951 and has quite the history. Not only was it home to the Girod Asylum, but it was also the former Third District Police Station for over 50 years.

The station had five jail cells, which have been converted into restrooms and an office space.

Their cochon de lait po’boy is an absolute must try. Served with a fried pickle for a unique twist, this is one po’boy that stands out from the rest.
