There’s no doubt that North Carolinians and wine were meant for each other. Within the Tar Heel State there are countless vineyards and wineries where natives and visitors alike can sip on local flavors straight from the grapes grown on the property. Perhaps one of our most well-known regions for wine is North Carolina’s Yadkin Valley, where you can spend all weekend touring the many wineries.

But there’s one Yadkin Valley winery that’s a must-see on any trip through this wine country.

RagApple Lassie Vineyards was founded in 2002 when a tobacco farm was turned into a vineyard and named after the former farm’s prized cow (RagApple Lassie) that won the blue ribbon at the 1957 NC State Fair. And the cow-theme at this unique winery doesn’t end with the silo that is adorned with a cow pattern.

And so does the label on all of the wine bottles. RagApple Lassie Vineyards has 10 award-winning wines you can taste by the glass or the bottle. The tasting room features a cozy seating area and two large televisions, as well as ample room for even a large group to mingle.

When designing the new winery, the owners called upon graduating seniors from UNC’s School of Architecture to design the new venture’s building.

The building features a few cutting-edge elements that may surprise you: first, the entrance takes you over a catwalk that looks down into the Tank Room where a portion of the magic takes place. In this image, you can see at the far end of the room is the entrance to the tasting room and gift shop. But this below-ground space and the grand entrance isn’t the only incredible feature of the winery…

There are rumors that a circular staircase located inside the cow-themed silo leads down to a hidden wine cellar deep below the surface where the wines are kept cool while they age. Is the rumor true? You’ll have to ask when you visit!
