Piscataway National Park is located in Accokeek, Maryland. The park is full of historic sites, hiking trails, and plenty of wildlife.

A little known area of the park is the sacred burial site of Chief Turkey Tayac.

He was a Piscataway Indian leader and activist through much of the 20th century. Most notably, he started movements for Native Americans to proudly take back their culture, in a time that society didn’t encourage.

He passed away in 1978 from leukemia at the age of 83. Although burials are usually prohibited in National Parks, it was important to Chief Turkey Tayac to be buried among the grounds of his ancestors. He awaited congressional action to permit a burial, and was successful.
