When the weather’s warm, it’s time to make some memories in Maine. The Pine Tree State has plenty of great boardwalks to explore, but there’s one in particular that’s an iconic spot to spend an afternoon.

The Old Orchard Pier has been named as one of America’s best boardwalks, and you’ll see why when you visit. It’s located on Old Orchard Beach on Saco Bay.

The first pier was built in 1898, and at 1,825 feet was the longest in the world. Several piers have come and gone throughout the years, destroyed by storms. The current pier is 500 feet long, built in 1980.

If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the crowds for a bit, explore underneath the boardwalk. At low tide, you can go for a long walk, and when the tide is just coming in, you can splash through the water.

All this exploration is sure to make you hungry. Take a little break at The Pier Pub, where you can sit at a picnic table and enjoy some lobster in the fresh air. There are several restaurants on the pier, where you can get everything from steak to seafood.

Of course, no visit to this boardwalk is complete without a box full of Original Pier French Fries. These tasty morsels have been served here since 1932, and they’re downright addictive.
