In a county known for having more covered bridges than any other place in America (and possibly the world), there is a unique inn that is unlike any place you’d ever choose to stay overnight. Rockville, Indiana is home to an old jail hotel that most people don’t even know exists.

Stay in an actual jail cell and dress up like a 19th century prisoner when you choose this one-of-a-kind spot. Scroll on for more details.

With a history that goes back to 1879, Old Jail Inn has been a hotel since 2010. Due to the hard work of several locals, the original Parke County Sheriff’s office is now one of the most unique destinations in the nation.

Nowhere else in the world can you willingly stay behind bars. This old jail hotel has five cells for rooms (as well as a few private suites). Rooms are named for notorious criminals like Jesse James, Al Capone, and Thelma & Louise, and they feature bare-bones amenities, and share a simple bathroom.

Guests are encouraged to rent out the whole inn, which is especially fun for bachelor parties, family weekends, and other small groups. Whether or not you have the place to yourself, it is fun to dress up in old prison attire and take photos around this old jail hotel.

Old Jail Inn takes reservations online, and a security deposit of half your total fee holds your spot and is nonrefundable (though it does become a credit should you need to cancel). As the inn is small, availability is limited, so contact the innkeepers as soon as possible.
