Ohio Bird Sanctuary Is Home To Many Species Of Birds

Spend a day outdoors amongst the natural beauty of Ohio, and your soundtrack will likely be the warbles and tweets of the many species of birds that call The Buckeye State home. These pretty, feathered friends are a joy to see in the wild, but sometimes they get sick or injured, and that’s when Ohio Bird Sanctuary steps in. Visit this charming little place to see all kinds of birds close up.

The Ohio Bird Sanctuary got its start back in 1988, and moved to its current location in 1992. It’s continued to grow and develop over the years, and today it’s home to 60 birds who live here permanently, and more who just come to stay while they’re rehabilitated to return to the wild.

You’ll find 90 wooded acres to explore here, including an interpretive lobby, outdoor housing for the birds, indoor and outdoor classrooms, and hiking trails.

All of the beautiful birds here arrived because they were sick, injured, orphaned, or could not live in the wild for other reasons. For instance, Seymour, one of the Great Horned Owls who lives here, fell out of her nest when she was just a tiny nestling and broke her wing. She’ll never be able to fly, so she calls the sanctuary home now.

Gus the Bald Eagle is a permanent resident here, too. He hangs out with his feathered friend Ted, who was hit by a car. Ted was brought to the sanctuary to heal the fractures in both wings, but he’ll never fly again so he can’t hunt for his own food.

Pretty native songbirds hang out in the aviary, waiting to meet you and say hello. Get a seed cup in the Visitor Center for just 25 cents, and a bird or two is certain to fly in and greet you.

Once you’ve visited with all the birds in the sanctuary, explore more of the property on its many trails. The woods here are home to 52 different bird species who are breeding or migrating through.

Visit the sanctuary Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Sunday noon to 4 p.m.. It’s closed on Mondays. Admission to the bird enclosure area is just $3 for adults and $1 for children.
