There’s something classically wonderful about hopping into the car for a summertime road trip with loved ones. Whether you’re zooming down Route 66 or simply exploring the corners of your own state, it’s tough to beat the simple excitement of a vacation on wheels. Personal finance company WalletHub recently released its 2019 rankings of America’s best and worst road trip states, and you might be surprised to hear which area snagged the number one slot.

Flickr/sporadic WalletHub’s 2019 road trip study ranked each of America’s 50 states based on 33 key metrics. The company considered statistics such as average gas prices, car security, abundance of scenic byways, presence of National Parks, and camping costs, which were compiled into three categories: costs, safety, and activities. While Wyoming and Minnesota took the second and third spots, North Carolina reigned supreme as America’s best state for summer road travel.
