A lesser-known area attraction is Lake Balmorhea, a pristine freshwater reservoir surrounded by majestic, towering mountains. Visiting this ethereal hidden gem is a bucket list summertime activity.
Just seven miles away from the famed state park is the lesser-known Lake Balmorhea. This pristine reservoir is fed by San Soloman Springs and Phantom Lake Canal.

It’s a prime fishing spot, populated with species such as bass, catfish, white crappie, and sunfish. The water hasn’t been plagued by a white algae bloom since 2013, so they’ve been able to multiply fruitfully over these past six years.

Bring the whole family and enjoy a picnic lunch followed by canoeing or kayaking all day long. If you’re passing through on a long road trip, feel free to spend the night — both tent and RV campsites are available for $10 and $20 per day, respectively.

You’ll find the lake two miles southeast of Balmorhea on Sandia Creek. To get there, stay on Business Loop 10 until it intersects with Houston Drive, where you’ll make a left.
