Summer is festival season, and one of the most beloved festivals in Nebraska is ready to celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2019. Head out to Lake McConaughy on July 27th for a unique day out that includes sand, sun, and lots of fun.
Kites and Castles has long been a favorite event at Lake McConaughy in Keith County. It’s the perfect day out for anyone who loves soaking up the sun and enjoying some classic outdoor activities.

The “castles” part of the festival’s name refers to sand castles, of course. Amateurs and experts alike are invited to create sand sculptures on the white sand beach - and they aren’t limited to just castles.

Entrants dream up a theme and a plan, then get to work bringing it to life on the beach. There are several categories for different skill levels and age groups to level the playing field a bit.

The resulting sand sculptures run the range from goofy to gorgeous and everywhere in between. You won’t believe the creativity that goes into these outdoor works of art.

Although judges choose most of the winners, spectators will also have the chance to vote on their favorite sculpture. The entry with the greatest number of popular votes wins the People’s Choice award.

Entering the competition and attending as a spectator are both free, making this an awesome low-cost event for everyone. You will need a Nebraska park permit to enter; you can purchase a yearly or daily pass in advance or at the park when you arrive.

The “kites” part of the festival is a leisurely afternoon of kite flying (or kite watching if you’re not keen on piloting your own).

As with the sand sculpture contest, both amateurs and experts are welcome to show off their skills. Kites of all shapes and sizes will fly high over the beach, adding a colorful, energetic layer to this fun festival.

A new activity called Kayak the Castles was added to the festival in 2017. Right after the awards ceremony for the castle contest, attendees can hop in a kayak to see the sculptures from a unique viewpoint. Bring your own kayak or borrow one of the demo kayaks or stand-up paddleboards.
