Midwest Industries founder Byron Godbersen is the man behind the Castles of Ida Grove. He first built one on his own estate, which was complete with a man-made lake and a replica of the HMS Bounty.

Godberson was so happy with his castle that he made it a mission to transform the town. The first public project was a stone tower and bridge over Odebolt Creek, near the town’s golf course.

From there, the idea grew and grew. Medical buildings and offices moved to castles, and the Ida County Courier building became a favorite place for visitors to see.

Skate Palace is probably America’s most interesting skating rink. Don’t worry, though, there’s no moat or draw bridge separating you from hours of old-fashioned fun.
