Arizona is home to quite a few tunnels, but none quite match the remoteness of this one. Hiding in Tonto National Forest near Devil’s Canyon is Claypool Tunnel, an old thoroughfare that’s been abandoned for more than 50 years. It’s located along a beautiful trail, accessible year-round to all fitness levels. Let’s take a virtual hike, shall we?
Up until 1952, Claypool Tunnel was the major thoroughfare through Queen Creek Canyon. U.S. 60 was rerouted, but this gaping hole still hasn’t been sealed off.

The hike is about four miles long and relatively easy. Along the way, you’ll see tons of historic artifacts like ore bins and even abandoned mine shafts.

Upon reaching the tunnel, you’ll be surprised at just how crude it is. With no reinforcements, the entire structure could’ve come crumbling down at any moment.

You’ll find the tunnel in Devil’s Canyon, near the Superior Water Tank. It’s located about two hours northeast of Phoenix.
