Ok, so “middle of nowhere” is maybe a little stretch, but in a state with a lot of drive ins, it’s not easy to find one that’s not right in a city. So Gus’s fits the bill. Besides, we’ll take any excuse to highlight this awesome spot. This seasonal spot is open from March to October, so by the time Gus’s opens, you’ll have been jonesing for their fabulous burgers and super shakes for more than a few months.

Gus’s is just kind of effortlessly cool. Retro and throwback, it manages to have the best kind of nostalgia without falling into kitsch territory. There are carhops and the occasional visit from Elvis, but mostly it’s just neon and chrome and a lot of fun.

There are classic car shows here every Saturday and the whole parking lot fills up with old school beauties, from big mid-century boats to souped up ’70s muscle cars.

You’ll be drawn to Gus’s initially because of the awesome look, but you’ll come back again and again because the service and food are so stellar. The burgers are juicy and delicious.

This spot serves up iconic Wisconsin frozen custard and the thick, rick, creamy base is filled to the brim with add ins to create over-the-top flavors of the day.

And that same delicious custard is used to make shakes, sundaes and more. The shakes are thick and filling and chock full of flavor. They’re the perfect foil for the hot dogs and burgers that Gus’s does so well.

If you’re not in the mood for a burger, check out Gus’s amazing Chicago-style hot dogs. These are the real deal and come with all the fixin’s you’d expect. They’re as good as it gets.

Of course, the classic burger cannot be topped. A great bun holds up to all the flavor they put inside, with fresh condiments and an all-beef patty that makes for a really amazing meal.

In addition to the standard burgers, you’ll also find all kinds of specialty items on the menu, so basically you just have to keep coming here to try it all.
