Have you ever gone through small towns and thought about the odd names they give some of these places? Though the name isn’t often what it seems, we have our own town that’s just a little oddly labeled here in Kansas. This quirky town might be named something a little stinky, but we promise it smells just like any other Kansas spot.
Have you ever passed this small town in Kansas before?
Many of you have probably guessed already, but today’s destination is none other than Gas, Kansas.
Brian Hawks/Facebook This small town is a great addition to any road trip in southeast Kansas. We love gas!
Gas got its start way back in the summer of 1898, when natural gas was discovered here.
Randy Rasa/Google Plenty of people came running to this gas hub. By 1910, the population had passed 1,000 people, and things were going well.
However, as natural gas became less important and people left small towns to gather in larger cities, it turned into a fun spot to photograph a funny water tower.
Randy Rasa/Google Today, the population is estimated around 700, which makes the town the perfect size for a quiet visit. Personally, we love the quiet.
Residents take the name Gas in stride, and even have a motto, stating “Don’t Pass Gas, Stop and Enjoy It!”
Randy Rasa/Google Though these instructions give everyone a good chuckle, we recommend the same.
Like any small town, we recommend visiting local businesses, chatting with residents, and enjoying our beautiful Kansas scenery.
Randy Rasa/Google It doesn’t take much to make this town a great destination. All you need is a reason and a time to go.
As for specific restaurants, a great place to grab a bite to eat is Tina’s, where you can enjoy a good buffet, a filling breakfast, and hopefully dessert.
