Settled in 1800s via the Amite River by French, German, and Italian immigrants, French Settlement is a charming little village full of history and worthy of a day trip.

While it was once a thriving center for sawmills, animal trappers, farming, and even a steamboat port, today this sleepy little village has a population hovering just over 1,000 residents.

The Decareaux House is an absolute must on your exploration of this beautiful little village. Built in 1898, this French Creole cottage is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today it serves as the Creole House Museum, where you can learn all about the history of the village.

In October, the village hosts the annual Creole Festival, which is always a family-friendly event everyone will enjoy. The festival takes place the third Sunday of October every year, and promises tons of Creole food, live music, arts & crafts, and much more.
