You might visit Maine in the summertime for a lot of different reasons. There are endless ways to get outside and enjoy nature. And when the weather is warm, there’s nothing like the sandy beaches of the coast. One thing that might not bring you to Maine is the promise of a tropical vacation. We have a lot going for us, but you certainly won’t find a palm tree in sight. But if you’re still hankering for a taste of the tropics you do have this option. This place is a perfect summer restaurant in Maine and we think you’ll agree!
Over the last few years, Maine has made a name for itself in culinary circles throughout the country. And having been named Bon Appetit’s best food city in the country makes it unsurprising that spots like Crown Jewel exist just off the coast of Portland.

Previously the general store on Great Diamond Island, Crown Jewel is one of the brightest, coolest spots you can eat in the state. It’s the brainchild of Alex Wight, the founder of a series of dinners called “Flanagans Table” in Buxton.

Despite being off the coast of Maine, stepping inside feels like a trip to the Caribbean. You’ll find walls in shades of hot pink, turquoise and calming pastels.

One of the best things about Crown Jewel is the journey to reach it. It can only be accessed by boat. You’re welcome to take your own boat, or you can take the Casco Bay Ferry Line, details for which are below.

If you’re looking for an extra-special outing consider getting a group of friends together to split a water taxi. For about $11 a person, you can take 6 people in one boat. Then, plan to take the ferry back.

While it’s no longer the island general store, there is still a shop you should plan to visit. They carry sweatshirts, t-shirts and snacks (like this brownie s’more!) to take for the trip back to Portland.

Crown Jewel can be visited by taking the Casco Bay Ferry to Diamond Cove. Check out the schedule for that route here. The restaurant is open 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m every day except Tuesday.
