Carr Manor sits in a former schoolhouse that was once Cripple Creek High School. The building was constructed in 1897 and operated as a school up until 1977.

During the 1920s, Cripple Creek High was not just the only high school in town; it was the only working school. As a result, the school expanded to educate young Coloradans all the way from first grade through high school graduation.

In 1982, the then-vacant building was purchased and converted into a hotel, which was named for former Colorado Governor and Cripple Creek High School alum, Ralph Carr.
