“Hey, we should go to that city park that used to be a volcano…” says almost no one in the world. There are extinct volcanos all over the planet, but in the United States, just six are located within the limits of a city. Oregon has two such volcanos – one in Portland; the other in Bend.

Mt. Tabor Park in Portland sits right on a volcano, and you can climb several series of staircases to the summit.

Mt. Tabor Park is Oregon’s most unique park. Sitting on a volcano with a summit of 636 feet, the park offers all kinds of recreation and some gorgeous city views.

The largest consists of 282 steps from bottom to top. When you tackle this beast, you’d better be ready for a workout.

The views from the summit will temporarily make you forget that you can’t breathe. You can see the city of Portland stretched out before you, and it’s a pretty nice vista.

You’ll also find many other, much smaller staircases in Mt. Tabor Park. From just a few steps to several dozen, each takes you to another interesting view or feature of the park.
