Over the last few decades, Iowa’s county conservation boards have worked tirelessly to preserve prairie, river, forest, and marshland for Iowans to enjoy and experience. One successful project that’s used and loved by Iowans from all over is the Chichaqua Bottoms Greenbelt. Originally acquired to preserve the Skunk River Oxbows and land, the park now offers an experience with native and restored prairie, wildlife, and a bridge that’s over one hundred years old.
Tucked along the Skunk River Oxbows in Polk County is the preserved Chichaqua Bottoms Greenbelt, where you’ll find hiking, camping, paddling, and fishing opportunities.

While many people travel to the Greenbelt for overnight camping excursions, the park makes for an excellent hike-and-picnic day trip.

One of the park’s hidden attractions is the 1910 Pony Truss Bridge. It’s one of only 17 of these bridges left in the country.

The bridge connects the Jack Pine Trail and the Cardinal Flower Trail. By hiking the two trails as a loop, you’ll cover just under two miles.

Though the bridge still spans the Skunk River, it’s now only open to pedestrian traffic. Walk confidently out to the center, where you’ll be high above the river, taking in gorgeous views of Iowa’s wild natural beauty.
