If you’ve ever watched Animal Planet and dreamed of coming face-to-face with the majestic creatures depicted on its shows, listen up. Unbeknownst to many, those exotic animals can be found right here in Texas! Yaks, Water Buffalo, and Wildebeests are just a few of the species residing at Cherokee Trace Drive-Thru Safari Park in Jacksonville. Let’s meet them, shall we?
Hiding in the lush East Texas greenery, Cherokee Trace is a 300-acre preserve that over two dozen exotic, endangered species call home. With an open Savannah similar to their native habitat, the safari park fosters a symbiotic relationship between visitors and the majestic creatures.

You’ll see animals from all over the world, many of which can’t be found anywhere else in Texas. Yaks, Water Buffalo, Wildebeests, and so many more gentle giants are absolute marvels to behold. Don’t be surprised if you have to stop so a camel or two can cross the road!

Each vehicle receives a sack of feed to allow for even closer interaction with the animals. Zebras, in particular, seem to flock towards the grub, so prepare to be surrounded!

You’ll also see a variety of different birds, including Rheas, Running Ducks, Turkeys, and Emus. It’s hard not to think twice about Thanksgiving dinner after meeting these cuties!

Some of the more unique residents are the Aoudad, Barasingha, Common Eland, and Lechwe. On the far right is a Watusi, or breed of cattle from Africa. I wouldn’t get anywhere near those horns!
