This pretty park encompasses 622 acres, and it was once the site of Champoeg - a pioneer town that was founded in 1842.

Champoeg is the site of an important event in Oregon’s history. Settlers in the Willamette met in 1843 to establish a provisional government for the Oregon Country.

The town was flooded in 1861, and the waters washed away almost every building. Champoeg was almost completely destroyed, and was abandoned after the flood. You’ll see some markers here that show how high the floodwater were that year.
