It should come as no surprise that one of the most beautiful and best swimming holes in South Dakota is in a town called Hot Springs. On a warm day, this gorgeous area is the perfect place to jump in and enjoy the cool, relaxing, and crystal clear water that gently flows and pours over waterfalls.
Cascade Falls has been used as a public swimming hole for over a century. The water originates from Cascade Springs about two miles upstream, constantly replenishing the pool with clean, pristine water.

Note: Like most swimming lakes in South Dakota, Cascade Falls has its fair share of rattlesnakes and poison ivy, so keep your eyes peeled while you’re in the area.

Where is the bluest water in South Dakota? While most South Dakota water is blue, the most vibrant and pristine of all would have to be that of Pactola Lake.
Does South Dakota have any man made swimming holes? While there are a handful of natural swimming lakes in South Dakota, the majority are manmade, as they are situated within either a constructed lake/dam or water park. Want to scope out a few of these manmade swimming holes? Check out Sylvan Lake, Lake Vermillion, and Evans Plunge.
Do I need to look out for algae blooms in South Dakota? Unfortunately, yes. Algae blooms (“a rapid increase or accumulation in the population of algae in freshwater or marine water systems”) have tainted bodies of water such as Lake Mitchell, making it nearly impossible to swim or fish. If you see any patches of algae in a body of water, steer clear, as certain kinds can be poisonous.
What are the best beaches in South Dakota? Contrary to popular belief, South Dakota has a number of beautiful, sandy beaches to visit, including the aforementioned Sylvan and Pactola Lakes, plus Lake Vermillion Recreation Area and Newton Hills State Park.
