When it comes to waterfront views and recreation, a lot of attention is paid to Connecticut’s shoreline beaches but we have plenty of lakes that are worth a second look. Our largest lake is tucked away on the western border of our state and like a dream nestled against the mountain. This mountain lake has beautiful scenery and is bursting with warm weather fun.
Candlewood Lake is 8.4 square miles making it Connecticut’s largest lake. The manmade lake is located in Fairfield and Litchfield counties and has some of the most expensive real estate in the state on its shores.

Popular for boaters, you’ll find all kinds of watercraft on Candlewood Lake. From motorboats to jet skis and kayaks to canoes, there’s plenty of room to get out on the water.

To access the lake from the shore, head to Candlewood Town Park in Danbury. The sandy beach is a fantastic spot to soak up some sunshine surrounded by mountain views and splash around in the water.

The clear water is ever so inviting on a hot summer day. A guarded swim area makes this an ideal spot for a family outing.

Pack up a picnic and spend the day! Shaded tables and an open grassy area are prime spots for sprawling out and enjoying lunch.

The park also has volleyball courts, a concession stand, and a boat launch. Younger kids will enjoy taking a break from the water by climbing and sliding on the playground.

Whether you enjoy Candlewood Lake from out on the water or from the shore, it always makes for an exceptional day trip. But you also might want to plan a trip in early July, especially for the Independence Fireworks show. The sight of fireworks over the mountain and reflected in the lake’s surface is a one-of-a-kind celebration.
