Iowans are a quirky bunch, and you can tell another Hawkeye from a mile away! Here are a few of the most common Iowa habits that become a part of our lives whenever we spend some time in our gorgeous and unique state.
- Criticizing tenderloins and fritters.
Facebook / The Buffalo Tavern No tenderloin is perfect, but Iowans are always on a quest to find the closest thing to divinity. Fritters aren’t even close… so please, don’t try to hide a fritter behind the “tenderloin” label.
- Expecting everything to be farm fresh.
Flickr / Jeff We’re used to getting our fruits and veggies from farm stands, and when we leave Iowa it’s hard to accept anything less than our farm-to-table cuisine.
- Calling it “pop.”
Flickr / Thomas Hawk Soda has become more and more common, but those of us who grew up here, it will only ever be “pop”.
- Craving Rhubarb Wine.
Google Local / Lynn Sessions Ackerman Winery is the oldest in the state, and they’re famous for their Rhubarb wine. We don’t need grapes out here to create a great vintage.
- Obsessively following Presidental politics.
Flickr / Phil Roeder Iowa’s caucus is such an important part of the Presidential election process, and Iowans really get into the spirit. We love the State Fair corn poll almost as much as we love to caucus!
- Going gravel.
Flickr / Alexander Rabb Iowans will avoid crowded highways any time we can. Going gravel is a way of life, and the scenic route is always the best decision.
- Putting ranch on EVERYTHING.
Facebook / Hidden Valley Ranch Pizza. Tacos. Chicken. You name it, we ranch it.
- Run towards the storms.
Flickr / Rich Iowans love watching the weather. We get some severe storms here, and there’s nothing as relaxing as watching a bad one roll in from the comfort of your porch.
